Note: The Society of Descendants of Dr. Johannes de la Montagne is attempting
to compile a history of the whole family. We have done enough research to
be pretty sure that the Montneys and the Mountneys are part of the
family. Dr. Jean Mousnier de la Montagne (1595-1672) was a French
Huguenot physician and vice-chancellor of the colony of New Netherlands,
arriving in New Amsterdam with his family in 1637. They have traced the
Mountney/Montney individuals back to Joseph Montany and his wife Margaret
Frank who were married in the Schenectady Reformed Dutch Church about
1786, both of them residents of Warrenbush, Montgomery County, New York.
They had at least four children, but descendants are mainly from the
sons: Albert Mountney of Ontario, John Montney of Ontario and Rochester,
NY; and Joseph Montney of Ontario, New York, and finally Michigan.
Joseph Mounteney came from France (via England during the Revolutionary
War) to Prince Edward Island. Fought in the Revolutionary War under
Marquis de Lafayette. His grandson, Charles Montney said that one of
Joseph's cousins was the aide-de-camp to Napoleon. When he fought in the
revolution, his name was Montfray. French embassy records show him as
from Marseille and he was an officer who operated cannons aboard ship.
The 1790 census of Montgomery County, NY shows him as Monterey living in
the town of Mohawk with 2 males under 16 and 1 adult female. This war
data is suspect. Joseph is said to have served under Lafayette and the 3
boys fought in the war of 1812.

There is a stone house on Waupoos Island. Susan Hall went to the land
records office on 28 April 2003. She found Joseph Monteny (document sp)
involved in land trasaction August 25, 1849 for this part of the Island
but was yet to determine if he built the house and if this is the exact
lot.
Local legand says that the stone house on the Island is the Mounteny
house. This is the only stone house on the Island. The document that
refers to land on the south west side of the Island where this house is.
That means it probably is but she didn't have definite proof.
